“…in the sky, Lord, in the sky.”
(Will the Circle Be Unbroken)
for A J Meek

Obsessive is the word
that might come to mind
if he weren’t an artist. Every
day a new photograph of
the sky—the same sky
you’re right to believe
we all live under as we
make our way from house
to car from car to house,
the same wild or whispering
sky whose weight we cannot
bear because it terrifies
or breaks the heart or elicits
a happiness too wild to imagine.
We give the sky a cautious
obligatory glance at sunset.
Another to check for weather.
At night we wash our clothes
drenched in its colors but
they bleed anyway between
the cracks of our dreams.
It’s too much, all too much
for us to do what we think
we have to do (just what is it
we think we have to do?)
until a bearded prophet
points his finger upward
and says, “Look.”
